Presbyterian Women

PW is a churchwide organization whose membership is open to all women. Presbyterian Women gather for prayer, Bible study, community building, a variety of mission-related activities, and of course, celebrations. They work to build an inclusive caring community of women that strengthens the Presbyterian Church (USA) and witnesses to the promise of God's kingdom. Part of its purpose is to support the mission of the church worldwide. PW is part of the Women’s Ministries Program Area of the National Ministries Division. PW helps to develop women's gifts for responsible and visionary leadership through training and experience. Flexibility is encouraged so that groups may determine the structure and programs most workable in their church or area.

Women pledge to the work of PW locally and in presbytery, synod and internationally church-wide. However, PW determines its own leadership, program, and budget – from the congregational level through the General Assembly. Our pledges for 2006-07 totaled $15,152. In addition to covering expenses of operation, our benevolences help to support Columbia Friendship Circle (scholarships for the seminary), Mission Haven (homes for missionaries on home assignment), Thornwell Home for Children, Presbyterian Student Center in Athens, Wee Kirk Montreat Conference, gift Bibles for high school seniors, and scholarships for women to attend retreats and conferences.

Bible Study Circles

At First Presbyterian Church, there are several Bible study groups, commonly referred to as PW Circles, which meet to fit various schedules and to allow a member to get to know many different women. Each year our circles have special projects including Camp Sonrise, Gateway House, NAMI, Our Neighbor, INK, CASA, seminary students from our local church, Living Waters For the World, My Sister's Place, and Hall County Foster Parent Association.

PW Birthday Banquet

First Presbyterian Church’s Mother-Daughter Banquet is held each year near Mother’s Day. Besides being a wonderful fellowship opportunity, the proceeds of the Presbyterian Women Birthday offering collected at the dinner benefit the diverse missions of the Presbyterian Women worldwide. In 2006-2007 we gave $2,515 for this special offering.

Wonderful Works
Years ago, this group began as an arm of the Presbyterian Women’s Ecumenical Missions Program by rolling bandages for church mission hospitals. Now, the women meet twice a month to use their sewing skills, create craft projects, and perform acts of service out of love for others. Wonderful Works is a hands-on women’s mission group that serves both the church and the community. Among other things, the group creates baptismal mementos for each baby baptized at FPC, items needed by the Child Development Center, stuffed toys for hospital pediatric patients, and much more.

HORIZONS is the official magazine and Bible study of PW. The annual Bible study is available in March. Each issue of the magazine has articles on spiritual growth, mission, and program planning.
