A
native of Yazoo City, Mississippi, Paul Evans is in his
twenty-fourth year as a member of the staff at First
Presbyterian Church, Gainesville, Georgia. Prior to
that, he served several churches throughout the South as
a director of youth ministries, a position that led him
to Gainesville in 1986. In 1989 he entered Columbia
Theological Seminary in Decatur, Georgia, and completed
his Master of Divinity degree in 1992, while continuing
to serve at First Presbyterian Church. He is also a 1969
graduate of Belhaven College, Jackson Mississippi, and
has done graduate study in New Testament research at
Fuller Theological Seminary, Pasadena, California.
Paul was ordained as a Minister of Word and Sacrament of
the Presbyterian Church (USA) in 1992 and was called to
become an Associate Pastor at First Presbyterian Church,
Gainesville, working primarily in the areas of Christian
education, pastoral care and worship He currently is the
teacher for the Rocks of All Ages Sunday School class,
the B-4 Bible study and supervises our congregation’s
Stephen Ministry. He has also served in leadership
positions with the Presbytery of Northeast Georgia, the
Synod of the South Atlantic and the General Assembly,
including a term as a Commissioner to the General
Assembly in 2003 and as a clergy representative to the
national Presbyterian Men’s
organization.
He
is a co-founder of GHAIN, now known as Gainesville
Action Ministry, and has served on the boards of the
Hall County Coalition on Adolescent Pregnancy, the Drug
Awareness Task Force of Hall County, and as chair of the
board of the Career Development Center of the Southeast,
Decatur Georgia. Paul has also been active with the Boy
Scouts, serving as our congregation’s institutional
representative and as chaplain for Boy Scout Troop 3.
Current affiliations include membership in the Society
of Biblical Studies, the Biblical Archeological Society
and the Jerusalem School of Synoptic Research. His
hobbies include reading, canoeing, and Biblical
archeology.
Paul is married to Karen McElroy Evans, a native
Georgian, who is an accountant for the Mansfield Oil
Company in Gainesville. |
