 Matt McGowan is a native of Greenville, North Carolina. He and his wife Louise have five children and and two grandchildren. Matt earned his Master of Divinity degree from Columbia Theological Seminary and his Doctorate from King College. In his career, Matt has served in many pastorates, including the Athens Presbytery, Albemarle Presbytery, Hanover Presbytery, New Orleans Presbytery, East Tennessee Presbytery, Presbytery of the Covenant, and Northeast Georgia Presbytery. Matt also served as a Chaplain in the U.S. Army reserves and retired with the rank of Colonel.

Matt has been very active in the Presbyterian Church on a national level, particularly in the area of missions.
